GIF to sprite sheet
Got an animation as a GIF? Get it back as a sprite sheet your engine can use.
Free, no sign-up. It runs in your browser: your files never leave your computer, and the tool works offline once the page has loaded.
How to use it
- Drop an animated GIF on the box.
- Choose how many frames go in a row (or one long strip).
- Download the PNG sheet, and the JSON with each frame’s place and time.
What you get
A PNG with every frame of the GIF on a grid, in order, and a JSON file in the layout Aseprite and many engines read: each frame’s rectangle and how long it is shown. Frames are composited the way a browser plays the GIF, so frames that only store what changed come out whole.
Why convert a GIF?
Game engines play sprite sheets, not GIFs. Sheets load faster, keep exact pixels and let the game choose the speed. If an animation only exists as a GIF, a preview someone sent you, an old asset, this gets it back.
Tips
- GIFs have up to 256 colours and on-or-off transparency: the sheet keeps exactly what the GIF holds.
- Frame times in GIFs are in hundredths of a second; they are in milliseconds in the JSON.
Making sprites from 3D models? Pixor renders a model into pixel-art sheets from every side, frame by frame, and writes GIFs, Aseprite files and engine formats itself. How it works.
