An oak barrel with bulging staves bound by three iron hoops and a sunken lid. It is a still prop rendered at 48 pixels from a three-quarter view. The slight bulge and dark hoops give it a familiar outline that reads well even when stacked in groups.
The barrel is a lathe profile with flat-shaded facets that read as individual staves, and the hoops are separate closed ring profiles. Light wood, Wood and Dark iron materials provide the three tones. At 480 triangles it is cheap to repeat.
Barrels fill taverns, docks, cellars and warehouses. In action games they are breakable, explosive or hiding places; in RPGs they are containers to search. Stack a few beside a wall for storage or scatter them as cover in a top-down shooter.
Recolour the wood darker for wine or tint it red for an explosive barrel. Barrels go with crates as a pair of containers, and outside the medium house as a tavern’s stock. Add the fire loop on top for a burning one, or the explosion when it breaks.
